E.ON Wasserkraft's power plant locations are surrounded by a total of 111 nature, wildlife and landscape conservation areas, bird sanctuaries and flora and fauna habitats. Power plant reservoirs represent about a third of Germany's bird sanctuaries.

Numerous hydroelectric power stations feature fish ramps and bypass channels. Also of ecological value are the power plants' cleaning screens. They help E.ON Wasserkraft remove thousands of tons of drift debris and consumer waste. This gives rise to 1.5 to 2 million euros in annual costs, which are incurred as a service to the public.
