The Force of Water: Basics and Cycle

Rain.

Although it may not always please us, precipitation is an important phase in the natural water cycle.

Nature´s water cycle is largely fed by evaporation from the world´s seas, rivers and lakes. The evaporated water is transported through the atmosphere as water vapor before precipitating, e.g., as snow or rain.

The amount of rainfall over the sea is slightly less than the quantity of water that evaporates from it. This results in a net transfer of water from the oceans to the continents, which feed snowfields, glaciers, streams, rivers, lakes and the groundwater.

The Earth´s Water Reserves

Bound in polar ice, water vapor and oceans, we'll show you where the globe´s main reserves are located as well as their present state.

Sources of Energy

The sun causes water to evaporate. It falls back down to the ground as rain, sleet or snow. The energy trapped in water stems from the amounts of water that precipitate down onto regions capable of making use of the proportion that flows above ground, as in rivers and lakes.
