Energy from White Coal
White coal was the term used by German technology pioneer Oskar v. Miller to describe Bavaria's only 'natural resource': hydroelectric power. Due to Bavaria's topography, about 16 percent of the state's demand for electricity is presently covered by hydropower.
The Company
Headquartered in Landshut, E.ON Energie subsidiary E.ON Wasserkraft operates 133 hydroelectric power plants throughout Germany. They combine for nearly 10 billion kilowatt hours-enough to supply three million homes with electricity for almost a year.
The idea of taking advantage of the 200-meter drop between Lake Walchen and Lake Kochel was masterminded in Munich at the turn of the century.
