Environmentally Friendly Hydropower
Clean Energy in Harmony with Nature
The Water Habitat
Water is an extremely sensitive habitat. We have installed fish ascent aides at many of our power plants. Furthermore, we participate in sophisticated research projects and investigations with a view to improving our understanding of the intricacies involved and increasing the protection of aquatic species.
Return to Nature
It is impossible to avoid interfering with nature when building hydroelectric power stations. Compensatory measures are thus an integral part of the planning phase. Scientific studies and practical experience have shown that such areas can be developed into bona-fide retreats for numerous animal and plant species in the space of a few years. Examples of such accomplishments include expansive stretches at the lower Inn as well as along the Isar and Danube rivers. People who live in these regions reap the benefits of these power station projects as well. Large greenbelt recreation areas have been set up and attract hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Ecological Cleansin
Another ecological feature is the cleaning done by the power station screens. They rid the water of garbage and waste before it flows into the turbines where it is enriched with oxygen. Year-in, year-out, the screens remove thousands of tons of drift debris, most of which is consumer waste.
Zero Raw Material Consumption, Zero Emissions
However, the main advantages hydropower possesses over other electricity generation techniques are that the process does not consume natural resources or emit pollutants. It was thus no surprise that the 'Agenda 21' Environmental Conference in Rio declared power production using the force of water a major goal for all countries.
