Modernizing the Waldeck 1 Pumped Storage Power Plant-Overhaul of the Upper Basin
State and Required Overhauling
The basin holds some 730,000 cubic meters of water, covering a surface area of 55,000 square meters. The northern, eastern and southern basin containments are a heavyweight concrete wall. The basin borders on a natural embankment to the west. Items in need of refurbishment are the wall crest, the side of the wall facing the water, and the basin's bed. The primary goal is to find a permanent solution to preventing moisture from penetrating the wall.
Overhaul Concept
Wall Crest
The wall crest will be covered with a crown of reinforced steel.
Side of the Masonry Dam Facing the Water
Loose layers of concrete and jetcrete slabs from previous revamping projects have to be removed. Major flaws will be repaired with jetcrete. Waterproof sheeting including a controllable drain system will provide the wall with new insulation.
Basin Bed
About half the basin bed will be fitted with a bituminous concrete insulation system (drain binder and asphalt insulator). The other half of the basin bed was overhauled using this technique back in 1979.
